OAKLAND, Calif. — Los Angeles Angels ace Jered Weaver has returned to Southern California for further examination of his bruised right arm and will likely miss his next start Friday against Detroit.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said before Wednesday’s series finale at Oakland that Weaver was back in the Los Angeles area to have his arm checked by Dr. Lewis Yocum. With an off day Thursday, each pitcher could slide up a day in the rotation on regular rest.

Weaver was struck on the right arm by a line drive from Dustin Ackley’s bat in the fifth inning of his loss Sunday at Seattle. He has not thrown since.

Weaver is 16-4 with a 2.86 ERA this season. He also pitched a no-hitter against Minnesota on May 2.

A’s McCarthy hit by line drive in head vs. Angels

OAKLAND, Calif. — Brandon McCarthy left in the fourth inning against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday after a hard line drive off the bat of Erick Aybar hit Oakland’s opening-day starter in the head.

McCarthy was taken to Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland as a precaution. The team said he never lost consciousness.

McCarthy had almost no time to react when Aybar lined his 91 mph cutter back. The ball bounced off the right side of McCarthy’s head, knocking the A’s pitcher down. He also landed on his head on the infield grass.

McCarthy eventually sat up and ran his hands through his hair and around his head. He walked off the mound under his own power to an ovation from the Oakland Coliseum crowd.

McCarthy began the day with an 8-5 record and a 3.10 ERA.

Jays to skip Romero in rotation

TORONTO — Mired in a 12-game losing streak, Blue Jays left-hander Ricky Romero is getting a little extra rest before his next start.

Manager John Farrell said Romero will skip his scheduled start Saturday at Boston and will work on nine days rest Sept. 12 against Seattle. Beginning with that start, Toronto will use a six-man rotation for the remainder of the season, with Aaron Laffey joining Romero, Brandon Morrow, Henderson Alvarez, J.A. Happ and Carlos Villanueva.

A first time All Star in 2011, Romero allowed seven runs in one-plus inning against Tampa Bay last Sunday in the shortest outing of his career. Winless since June 22 at Miami, he’s 8-13 overall and his ERA of 5.85 is the highest among qualified AL starters.
